NEW DELHI – Responding to Opposition claims that the India-US trade deal was harmful to the interests of farmers, Commerce and Trade Minister Piyush Goyal Wednesday said that India's farmers have full trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and believe he would not compromise their interests.

Speaking to mediapersons outside Parliament, Goyal said, "India has protected its interests, its farmer's interests, and today every citizen and every farmer trusts Prime Minister Modi that he won't let any harm come to them."

Earlier in the day, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi said in a speech to the Lok Sabha that the Narendra Modi government had opened floodgates for US agricultural products to enter the Indian market, and that it will destroy Indian farmers who have smaller landholdings and fewer means than the US farmers.

"As the commerce minister, I want to assure that all decisions were taken keeping in mind the welfare of our farmers, and that their interests are secured," Goyal said.  End
