MUMBAI – Unemployment in India for persons aged 15 years and above eased in the December quarter while labour force participation rate increased at a national level. The overall unemployment rate for persons aged 15 years and above fell to 4.8% in the December quarter from 5.2% a quarter ago, accoding to data released Monday by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
Rural unemployment rate for persons aged 15 years and above fell to 4.0% in the December quarter from 4.4% a quarter ago, according to results of the Periodic Labour Force Survey for Oct-Dec. In urban areas, unemployment rate eased to 6.7% in the December quarter from 6.9% in the previous quarter.
On average, 574 million people employed in India in the December quarter, higher than 562 million in the September quarter, based on the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's projected population figures, the statistics ministry said in a release.
The labour force participation rate--the percentage of persons working or seeking work--rose 55.8% in the December quarter from 55.1% in the September quarter, driven by an improvement in rural areas. The rural labour force participation rate increased to 58.4% in the last quarter from 57.2% in Jul-Sept. The urban labour force participation fell to 50.4% in Oct-Dec from 50.7% in the September quarter.
The labour force participation rate among males across India was much higher at 77.6% compared with 34.9% for females during the December quarter. The participation rate was 77.2% for males and 33.7% for females in the September quarter.
The worker population ratio--the percentage of employed persons in the population--rose to 53.1% in Oct-Dec from 52.2% in the September quarter. In urban areas, the worker population ratio was 47.1% in the December quarter, lower than 47.2% a quarter ago. Rural worker population ratio was 56.1% in Oct-Dec, higher than 54.7% in the previous quarter.
Nearly 59% of the rural workforce was employed in the agriculture sector during the December quarter, an increase from nearly 58% in the previous quarter. In urban areas, the tertiary sector remained stable, accounting for 61.9% of workers during Oct-Dec, a tad lower than 62.0% a quarter ago.
The share of self-employed people in the overall workforce increased in the December quarter to 56.3% from 55.8% in the September quarter. End
