MUMBAI – The benchmark equity indices closed higher Tuesday, continuing their rise for the third sesion. Volatility in the market cooled during the day's session despite the weekly expiry of the Nifty 50 index. Traders covered their short positions in the options contracts but not enough to push the 50-stock index dramatically higher. Investors primarily bought shares of media companies alongside those belonging to the metal and automotive sectors. The mid- and small-cap indices outperformed their benchmark peers.

The Nifty 50 closed at 25935.15 points, up 67.85 points or 0.3%. Traders wrote call options as well as put contracts, indicative of range-bound movement in the sessions to follow. Tuesday, the Nifty 50 moved in a thin range of 119 points. Technical analysts had indicated that the index would face resistance at the pyschologically important level of 26000 points.

The BSE Sensex closed at 84273.92, up 208.17 points or 0.3%. Barring the pharmaceutical, healthcare, and banking sectoral indices, all others closed in positive territory. The mid- and small-cap indices ended 0.4-0.5% higher.

Investors primarily bought shares of quick commerce operators such as Eternal and Swiggy throughout the session, pushing them to top the Nifty 50 and Nifty 200 indices, respectively. Eternal ended the session up 5.2% at INR 303.80 and Swiggy closed nearly 7% higher at INR 355.75. Among others, Tata Steel and Oil and Natural Gas Corp. closed 2-3% higher.

The Nifty Media, which closed 2.4% higher, was the top gainer among sectoral indices. Shares of Sun TV Network rose for the second sesssion in a row after announcing poor December quarter results Friday. The stock has gained 14% since. Other media stocks such as D.B. Corp., PVR Inox, and Network18 Media & Investments ended 2.5-3.4% higher.

Shares of automobile companies gained amid robust retail sales in January as showed by data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association. Retail sales of automobiles continued to grow at a robust pace in January, supported by the lower goods and services tax rates and higher rural demand. Dealerships across India sold 2.72 million automobile units in January, up 17.6% on year and 34% on month. Bajaj Auto, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Eicher Motors all closed around 2% higher. The Nifty Auto ended 1.4% higher.

Shares of textile manufacturing companies were hit after the US Monday trimmed the reciprocal tariff on Bangladeshi goods to 19% from 20?rlier. This reduction may provide Bangladesh, which has lower input costs than India due to relatively cheaper labour, a competitive edge over its immediate neighbours. Shares of K.P.R. Mills, Vardhman Textiles, and Welspun Living ended 3-6% lower.

Shares of BSE hit a record high of INR 3,188.40 on the back of the exchange's robust December quarter earnings and increase in market share in index options. Moreover, worries about the potential impact of the increase in securities transaction tax on its earnings were allayed after the exchange's management said in a conference call that it does not see a specific impact on Sensex futures. The stock ended 6.3% higher at INR 3,174.20.
