--RBI: Indian cos raised $4.44 bln via external commercial borrowing in Dec

 

MUMBAI – Indian companies raised $4.44 billion through external commercial borrowings and foreign currency convertible bonds in December, data released by the Reserve Bank of India Tuesday showed. The quantum of total external borrowings was the highest since March, when companies had raised $11.04 billion. Indian companies had raised $2.40 billion in November.

 

Of the total, Indian companies raised $3.12 billion through the automatic route in December, with Indian Oil Corp. Ltd. and Aditya Birla Capital Ltd. being the largest borrowers. They raised $300 million each. The state-owned oil refiner raised money to refinance an earlier borrowing, while the non-banking finance company raised the money for on-lending. Indian Railway Finance Corp. Ltd. was the third highest borrower. It raised $299.52 million in December.

The amount raised through the approval route was $1.31 billion. Interglobe Aviation Ltd., which operates passenger airline Indigo, borrowed externally for the third straight month in December, raising $463.71 million through four bonds for the import of capital goods. Power Finance Corp. Ltd. raised $499.86 million while Export-Import Bank of India raised $350 million through the approval route, both for on-lending.
