MUMBAI – The first-year premium income of life insurance companies in India rose 21.6% on year to INR 374.78 billion in January, data released by the Life Insurance Council Monday showed. In December, life insurance companies' premium income was INR 421.51 billion.

 

Life Insurance Corp. of India led the rise in premium income in January, with a 25.5% on-year increase to INR 204.41 billion. Private life insurance companies' premiums were up 17.2% in January at INR 170.37 billion.

 

LIC's market share increased in January from the end of 2025 and also a year ago. Its market share was 54.5% in January, against 50.5% in December and 52.9% in January 2025.

 

Among private insurers, SBI Life Insurance Co. Ltd.'s first-year premium income rose 7.9% on year to INR 35.34 billion in January and that of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co. Ltd. rose 12% to INR 19.90 billion.

 

HDFC Life Insurance Co. Ltd.'s premium income fell 2.9% on year in January to INR 29.24 billion. Canara HSBC Life Insurance Co. Ltd. reported a 20% growth in premium income last month to INR 2.45 billion.

 

Insurance companies' premium income during Apr-Jan was INR 3.48 trillion, up 13.9% on year.
