MUMBAI – The gross direct premium underwritten by non-life insurance companies rose 14.9% on year to INR 333.46 billion in January, according to data released by the General Insurance Council. In December, the premium income was INR 284.47 billion.

 

General insurance companies saw a 9.9% on-year rise in gross premiums in January at INR 265.35 billion. The gross direct premium of standalone health insurance companies was INR 45.28 billion in November, up 23.6% on year.

 

The New India Assurance Co. Ltd.--the largest non-life insurer by market share--reported a 7.1% on-year fall in gross direct premium in January at INR 35.18 billion. The public sector insurer's market share rose to 13.07% in Apr-Jan from 12.82% a year ago.

 

Gross direct premium underwritten by Bajaj General Insurance Ltd. rose nearly 9% on year to INR 18.21 billion in January. ICICI Lombard General Insurance Co. Ltd. reported premium income of INR 29.78 billion for January, up 16.3% on year. 

 

Among standalone health insurance companies, Niva Bupa Health Insurance Co. Ltd.'s gross direct premium underwritten rose 35% on year to INR 8.54 billion in January and Star Health and Allied Insurance Co. Ltd.'s gross direct premium underwritten grew 18% on year to INR 17.28 billion during the month.

 

For Apr-Jan, the gross direct premium underwritten by non-life insurance companies was up over 9% on year at INR 2.83 trillion, data showed.
