--RBI: India Jan 30 FX assets $562.39 bln, down $493 mln on week

--RBI: India Jan 30 gold holding $137.68 bln, up $14.60 bln on week

MUMBAI – India's foreign exchange reserves rose to a record high of $723.8 billion in the week ended Jan. 30, primarily on the back of a record jump in gold holdings, data released by the Reserve Bank of India showed Friday. Reserves rose $14.4 billion on week, the biggest weekly jump since March 2025.

The value of the central bank's gold holdings jumped to a record high of $137.54 billion in the reporting week. Gold holdings were up $14.60 billion from the previous week. Gold was among the best performing assets in 2025 and started 2026 on a strong footing with prices rising around 30% in January. The surge was driven by heightened geopolitical tensions, concern about the independence of the US Federal Reserve, and speculative buying by Chinese investors, among other factors.

Foreign currency assets, however, fell $493 million from the previous week to $562.39 billion as of Jan. 30. Calculated in dollar terms, the RBI's foreign exchange reserves also reflect the impact of appreciation or depreciation of currencies other than the dollar, such as the euro, the pound sterling, and the yen, held by the central bank.
