MUMBAI – The water level in 166 key reservoirs of the country was 122.313 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, which is 66.6% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The water level was up 8.5% from a year ago and nearly 25% higher than the normal storage for the period, which is the average storage for the past 10 years, the data showed.
In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 12.29 billion cubic metres, which is 62% of the total live storage capacity. In the same period last year, the water level was nearly 35% of the live storage capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.
In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 13.99 billion cubic metres, over 64% of the total live storage capacity, against nearly 61% in the corresponding period last year. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.
The water level in the western region was 29.73 billion cubic metres. This is over 78% of the total live storage capacity, against 74% last year. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.
In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 33.58 billion cubic metres as of Thursday. This is 69% of the total live storage capacity, compared with over 64% a year ago.
The water level in the southern region was 32.71 billion cubic metres, over 59% of the total live storage capacity, the data showed. At this time last year, the water level in the region was 60% of the total live storage capacity.
Of the 166 reservoirs in the country, 154 reported more than 80% of normal storage and 12 were at 80% or below the normal storage. Of these 12, two reported storage up to 50% of the normal.
India received an average of 1.5 millimetres of rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, 61% below the normal 3.9 millimetres for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department. End
