Freight traffic handled by major Indian ports up 8% YoY Apr-Jan

MUMBAI - Freight traffic handled by major Indian ports in Apr-Jan rose 8.15% on year to 755.84 million tonnes, data released by the Indian Ports Association showed. This was mainly because of the rise in crude oil and petroleum products cargo, which accounted for nearly one-third of the total cargo handled at all the major ports across country.
Crude oil and petroleum products cargoes rose nearly 10% on year to 228 million tonnes in Apr-Jan. The volume of liquids, other than crude and petroleum products, rose a mere 0.26% on year to 28.03 million tonnes.
Other than crude oil and other liquid cargo, container traffic increased 10.22% on year to 176.26 million tonnes. Raw fertiliser cargo rose 5.86% on year to 9.23 million tonnes in Apr-Jan. The volume of finished fertilisers imported in the 10 months of 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) jumped 41.66% on year to 11.41 million tonnes.
The cargo volume of thermal coal rose 1.24% on year to 107.38 million tonnes and Coking coal rose 9.26% on year to 53.68 million tonnes in Apr-Jan. Miscellaneous traffic was up 7.72% at 100.12 million tonnes. Meanwhile, the volume of iron ore pellets rose 8.91% to 42.63 million tonnes.
Among the ports, Deendayal port at Kandla handled the highest traffic at 131.25 million tonnes, followed closely by Paradip Port at 129.70 million tonnes, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 84.49 million tonnes.
