MUMBAI – The benchmark indices closed marginally higher Wednesday after moving in a range for most part of the session. Their gains were limited as information technology stocks fell sharply on concerns about artificial intelligence companies replacing core software companies. This sentiment was reverberated across global markets.
Though the US slashing tariff on imports from India will be a net positive for domestic companies, investors are still waiting for an official document that outlines the extent of the tariff cut and its sector-specific impact. "(After the US-India trade deal) manufacturing is one sector that I am overweight on," Vinit Bolinjkar, head of research at Ventura Securities, said. Textile, automation, and semiconductor manufacturers will benefit the most from this deal, he said. Shares of companies related to these sectors extended their gains Wednesday after rising sharply Tuesday.
The Nifty 50 closed at 25776 points, up 0.2%. The 50-stock index opened lower but quickly recovered losses early in the trade. Later, it was choppy for the better part of the day. The BSE Sensex closed marginally higher at 83817.69 points. Broader market indices, particularly small-cap indices, outshone their benchmark peers. The Nifty Smallcap closed almost 2% higher.
On Tuesday, American depository receipts of Infosys had closed 5.6% lower and those of Wipro fell almost 5%. The fall of IT stocks was triggered by Anthropic releasing 11 new plug-ins for its Claude Cowork agent, which is an agentic no-code AI assistant designed for enterprises. There are fears that the number of clients for core software developers may be hurt by AI tools, considering that AI players could replace core software and business models based on outsourcing, according to analysts.
Reacting to the fall in ADRs of Indian companies, shares of Wipro, Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies, Tata Consultancy Services, and Infosys fell sharply Wednesday. They closed 4-7% lower and were the worst hit among Nifty 50 constituents. Outside of the 50-stock index, shares of LTIMindtree, Info Edge (India), Coforge, and Latent View Analytics ended 5–7% lower. However, several analysts have called this crash in stock prices a "knee-jerk" reaction and some even expect a sharp rebound in the days to come.
Eternal ended over 5% higher, rising the most among Nifty 50 stocks. On Tuesday, the stock briefly hit the 10% upper circuit after Jefferies added it to its India 'model' portfolio, Moneycontrol reported. Eternal will replace Godrej Consumer Products in the international brokerage's India 'model' portfolio, due to its strong growth and margin improvement across quick commerce and food delivery segments, Jefferies said.
Shares of Trent closed 5% higher ahead of the company's December quarter earnings. Brokerages expect the company's earnings to rise 16% on year to INR 5.43 billion, according to an average of four estimates.
Oil exploration companies were sharply up after Brent Crude oil futures rose due to concerns of an escalation in US-Iran tensions, which investors feel may disrupt crude oil supply and drive up prices. A group of Iranian gunboats approached a US-flagged tanker in the Strait of Hormuz north of Oman, Business Standard reported. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries exports most of their crude oil through the Strait. The April contract of Brent Crude Oil futures rose nearly 1% to $67.75 per barrel on the Intercontinental Exchange on Wednesday.
Shares of Lloyds Metals and Energy ended 10% higher after the company late Tuesday reported an over twofold on-year increase in its consolidated net profit for the December quarter to INR 10.47 billion, and a three-fold rise in its revenue from operations to INR 50.58 billion. Sequentially, the net profit almost doubled, supported by a surge in other income, which rose to INR 972.3 million from INR 180.2 million in the year-ago quarter.
Among the other big movers, Adani Power ended over 8% higher. The stock rose for the third consecutive session, gaining almost 17% in three sessions. Shares of Tube Investments of India ended nearly 6% higher after the company reported double-digit growth in its bottom line and top line to INR 1.89 billion and INR 21.52 billion, respectively, for the December quarter, beating analysts' estimates slightly. Shares of Devyani International rose over 6?ter the company's consolidated net loss of INR 103.89 million for Oct-Dec came in lower than analysts' estimate.
Among the Nifty 500 companies, Eclerx Services and Sai Life Sciences closed around 8% lower each. They fell the most among the companies. Meanwhile, shares of BLS International Services closed over 12% higher and those of Valor Estate closed with over 16% gains.
