NEW DELHI – Eight Opposition members of the Lok Sabha were suspended Tuesday for the rest of the Budget session of Parliament for "reaching the well of the House and throwing papers at the Chair". The House was then adjourned for the day amid pandemonium.
Those suspended were Congress members of Parliament Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, Kiran Kumar Reddy, Prashant Padole, Manickam Tagore, and Dean Kuriakose, and Communist Party of India (Marxist) parliamentarian S. Venkatesan.
Earlier, the Lok Sabha saw two quick adjournments minutes after convening, first over the India-US trade deal and then when government ministers objected to Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi raising the issue of the confrontation with the Chinese army in 2020.
As the Chair intervened, saying the "permission" was only to speak on the motion of thanks to the president's address, Gandhi said it was his right to speak in the House. "You don't give me permission to speak, I am the leader of the Opposition of this country. It is my right to speak in this House," Gandhi said.
As the Treasury benches continued to heckle Gandhi, who insisted he would raise the issue of Chinese aggression as it is important for national security, some Opposition members walked into the well of the House and tossed papers in the air.
When the House reassembled at 1500 IST, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju moved a resolution to suspend the eight Opposition members for the rest of the session. The House then adopted the resolution and the Chair announced the suspension before adjourning the Lok Sabha for the day.
In the Rajya Sabha, members of several Opposition parties staged a walkout after their demand for a discussion on the India-US trade deal was ignored by the government. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh raised the issue of the deal soon after Zero Hour. He said the information about the deal was being received from Washington while the Indian government was reluctant to share details. Leader of the House J.P. Nadda said the government will soon make a statement on the deal, but the Opposition members continued to raise slogans. They eventually staged a walkout. End
