NEW DELHI – The Opposition Tuesday urged the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance government to give more clarity on the terms of the trade deal with the US, which was first announced by US President Donald Trump late Monday evening India time, and present the text of the trade deal in Parliament for debate.

The Lok Sabha saw repeated adjournments over the issue on Tuesday. Minutes after convening at 1100 IST, the House was adjourned till 1200 IST as Opposition MPs raised slogans and demanded answers from the government on the trade deal. On reassembling, the House was again adjourned till 1400 IST amid uproar by Opposition members.

As per Trump's post on his social media platform Truth Social, India has committed to cut tariff and non-tariff barriers for American goods to zero, to stop buying Russian oil, and buy American-made products "at a much higher level", including agricultural products. There has been no clarity from the Indian government's side on the terms of the deal.

"From the information President Trump has provided, it is abundantly clear that Prime Minister Modi has--like he did on May 10, 2025--completely surrendered," Indian National Congress general secretary and member of Parliament Jairam Ramesh wrote on social media platform X. "He has most definitely appeased President Trump. India stands diminished by this unfortunate sequence of events." He added that the text of both the trade deals, with the European Union and the US, must be laid on the table of both houses of Parliament and debated.

Meanwhile, US Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins Tuesday thanked Trump for "delivering for our American farmers". "New US-India deal will export more American farm products to India's massive market, lifting prices, and pumping cash into rural America," Rollins wrote on X.

Samajwadi Party President and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said that throwing open the Indian market for American farm produce was a betrayal of the "70% of India's population that depends on farming". He said he was wondering under what pressure the Modi government was taking such anti-people steps. "This will not only affect our farmers but also the middle- and lower-middle class," Yadav wrote on X.  End
