NEW DELHI – India's goods and services tax collections grew 6.2% on year to INR 1.934 trillion in January, excluding cess collections, government data released Sunday showed. The GST mop-up rose on year in January even after including cess collections, albeit at a slower pace.
Including cess, the government collected INR 1.991 trillion as GST, up 2.1% on year. In December, GST collections including cess had grown 1.3% on year to INR 1.791 trillion. January is the last month when compensation cess was collected.
In September, the GST Council had lowered taxes on several goods and reduced the tax slabs to two -- 5% and 18% -- from four earlier. The Council also removed the compensation cess from all items, except tobacco products. As a result, the government's cess collection fell sharply to INR 58.68 billion in January against INR 130.09 billion a year ago.
The GST compensation cess levy on tobacco and related products will be discontinued from Sunday. The government has instead imposed an excise duty on cigarettes in the range of INR 2,050-INR 8,500 per thousand sticks based on the length and type of the product.
Central GST collection in January was INR 387.92 billion, higher than INR 360.77 billion a year ago. State GST collection last month was INR 478.17 billion, higher than INR 449.42 billion collected in January 2025. Integrated GST mop-up was INR 1.068 trillion, up from INR 1.011 trillion a year ago.
Domestic GST revenue grew 4.8% on year in January to INR 1.411 trillion, while import revenue increased 10.1% on year to INR 522.53 billion. GST revenue, net of refunds and excluding cess, rose 7.6% on year to INR 1.707 trillion in January. Refunds, excluding for cess, during the month fell 3.1% on year to INR 226.65 billion. The post-settlement revenue of states was INR 917.31 billion in January, up 6% on year. End
