HYDERABAD - Public-sector aerospace and defence manufacturer Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. is working to make a civil aviation aircraft in three years as part of its strategy to increase the civil aviation portion of its portfolio, D.K. Sunil, chairman and managing director, said Wednesday. He was speaking to reporters at Wings India 2026, a bi-annual aviation industry event, here.
Sunil said the aircraft will be a knocked-down version of the Russian SuperJet 100. In October, HAL had signed an agreement with Russia's United Aircraft Corp. to produce the Sukhoi Superjet 100, also known as the SJ-100 regional passenger aircraft, in India, marking the first time a complete passenger jet will be manufactured domestically and supporting short-haul connectivity in the country.
Sunil said the company will use its existing aircraft manufacturing facilities at Nashik or Nagpur in Maharashtra to make the new aircraft. He said the company may scale up its capital expenditure plan if needed for the new aircraft plan. For the financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), HAL had announced a capital expenditure of INR 30 billion.
Sunil said the company's aim is to get 25% of its revenue from the civil aviation sector in the next 10 years. Currently, the sector's share in the company's revenue is only 4-5%. HAL also plans to foray into aircraft-leasing services. It plans to get 10 aircraft from Russia in the next 18 months for this purpose.
The company is expecting robust demand for its helicopters. It is targeting the delivery of 10 helicopters to Pawan Hans in FY27, which will be deployed at Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd.'s onshore facilities. The company is also expecting a large number of orders from the defence sector for its helicopters in FY27. Sunil said the company is capable of producing 30-35 helicopters a year now.
On Wednesday, shares of Hindustan Aeronautics ended 6.3% higher at INR 4,624 on the National Stock Exchange. End
