NEW DELHI – Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Thursday dropped a hint that the war with Russia may end soon and invited investment into his country. Zelenskyy was speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. His comments drew loud applause from the audience.
"God bless, the war will stop (soon). I hope so," Zelenskyy said in response to a query about the trilateral Ukraine-US-Russia meeting in the United Arab Emirates scheduled for the weekend. However, he stressed that Russia, too, has to be ready to make compromises.
"It's better than not to have any kind of dialogue," Zelenskyy said. "We are in a difficult situation, but so is Russia. We are answering their attacks." The president said nobody knows what is going on his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin's head.
Hours earlier, the Ukrainian leader had a meeting with US President Donald Trump, who is pushing for a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine to end the war raging since February 2022. On his meeting with Trump, Zelenskyy said it was positive but refused to divulge details. "During any dialogue with any president, I have to defend the interests of my country," he said. "That's why the dialogue is... maybe it's not simple... the last mile is usually more difficult."
During his address to the forum Wednesday and again at the launch of his "Board of Peace" Thursday, Trump had claimed that he had already ended eight wars across the globe and another war "may end soon", even as he mentioned the challenges in the way. The biggest challenge, Trump said Wednesday, is the "abnormal hatred between Putin and Zelenskyy", which means that when one side agrees to a proposal, the other backs out.
Asked how people can help Ukraine, Zelenskyy said defending the country is "very expensive" and urged business leaders at Davos to open offices in his country to help its economy. "If you trust Ukraine, if you believe in our independent life after war, this is the biggest chance to invest," he said. "Open offices in Ukraine--though a little bit risky right now--but open offices, give jobs to our people... come to Ukraine. This is the real support--jobs, money, investment--not words," he said.
