MUMBAI – Benchmark equity indices ended sharply lower Tuesday after trade tensions between the US and European countries triggered a sell-off in the Indian market. Most Asian indices and European indices fell as well after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose fresh tariffs on nations opposing his bid to purchase Greenland.

The Nifty 50 index ended at its lowest closing level in over three months at 25232.50 points, falling 1.4%, or more than 350 points from Monday. As many as 48 out of the 50 index constituents ended in the red, with HDFC Bank and Tata Consumer Products being the only stocks that managed to eke some gains. The BSE Sensex, which settled 1.3% lower, or down more than 1000 points, also closed at its lowest level in over three months at 82180.47 points.

Trump said he will surely put tariffs against countries that oppose his demand to take control over Greenland, according to a BBC report. On Monday, European Union leaders urged for de-escalation of tensions and talks on the issue after Trump threatened to impose 10% tariffs on eight European nations starting Feb. 1 until a "deal" is struck on Greenland.

In the broader market, all indices ended in the negative territory. The small-cap indices and mid-cap indices closed almost 3% lower. All sectoral indices also closed lower. The India VIX ended nearly 8% higher at 12.7300, gaining for the fourth straight session. The volatility index has gained nearly 14% in the last four sessions.

Shares of Newgen Software Technologies ended nearly 15% lower at an over two-year low of INR 628.45. The bottom line was impacted by a one-time cost of INR 351 million due to the new labour codes. Excluding the one-time cost, the consolidated net profit of the company came in at INR 979.13 million.

Bharat Heavy Electricals closed the session almost 5% lower at an over two-month low of INR 250.15. The stock fell despite the company reporting more than threefold year-on-year growth in consolidated net profit, broadly in line with Street expectations.

LTIMindtree closed nearly 7% lower after the company's consolidated net profit for the reporting quarter fell 31% on quarter and 11% on year to INR 9.71 billion. If adjusted for the one-time cost incurred due to the implementation of the new labour codes, the company's consolidated net profit was INR 15.61 billion. The company's consolidated revenue rose around 4% sequentially and 12% on year to INR 107.81 billion for the quarter.

Its bottom line was up over 9% on year, while its top line was up over 21% on year.

Oberoi Realty settled 8% lower at an over nine-month low of INR 1,523.8 after the company missed the consensus estimate for its December quarter net profit. The real estate developer Monday posted flat on-year growth in its bottom line for Oct-Dec. The company's consolidated net profit for the reporting quarter rose 0.7% on year but fell over 18% sequentially to INR 6.23 billion, lower than the INR 7.04 billion expected by analysts.

Deepak Nitrite snapped a seven-day losing run and ended over 4% higher.
