RBI governor meets MDs, CEOs of urban co-op banks, industry representatives

MUMBAI - Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra Monday met managing directors and chief executive officers of select urban co-operative banks in Mumbai, underscoring the sector's role in credit delivery to underserved segments and the need for strong governance and asset quality oversight, the central bank said in a release.
Representatives from the National Urban Cooperative Finance and Development Corp Ltd and the National Federation of Urban Co-operative Banks & Credit Societies Ltd were also present. Deputy Governors Swaminathan J. and S.C. Murmu, along with senior Reserve Bank officials, attended the meeting.
The governor highlighted the continued relevance of urban co-operative banks in advancing financial inclusion and extending credit, particularly in underserved areas. He also referred to various policy initiatives undertaken by the RBI for the co-operative banking sector since the last interaction in March and expressed confidence that these measures would help the sector strengthen and grow in a sustainable manner, the release said.
Malhotra stressed the importance of maintaining high standards of governance, robust underwriting practices and vigilant monitoring of asset quality. He further emphasised the need for a customer-centric approach, ethical conduct and timely resolution of grievances to preserve trust in the co-operative banking system. End
