NEW DELHI – Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal met US Senator Steve Daines and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor Monday. Both sides had "productive exchange of views on our bilateral relationship," Goyal said in a social media post on X.
Goyal's post did not mention anything about the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement, but the meeting comes just a week after the recently appointed ambassador delivered his inaugural statement at the US embassy in India, where he had said that both sides were actively engaged for the trade deal. Last week, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal had also said that India and the US were likely to sign the agreement soon. However, he declined to give any timeline.
Currently, Indian goods attract a 50% tariff in the US, which includes a 25% punitive tariff for India's strategic partnership with Russia. So far, Indian exports to the US have held up despite steep duties, rising 9.8% on year to $65.88 billion in Apr–Dec. But in the absence of a trade deal, India may face duties of up to 500% if US Congress enacts the bipartisan sanctions bill targeting Russia and its trading partners. End
