NEW DELHI – Prime Minister of UK Keir Starmer Monday said that any decision about the future status of Greenland belonged to the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark alone. His remarks came after US President Donald Trump shared a fresh 'threatening' message to Greenland.

Trump claimed that Denmark has been "unable to do anything" about getting the "Russian threat away", and that it "will be done" now. "NATO has been telling Denmark, for 20 years, that 'you have to get the Russian threat away from Greenland'," Trump wrote on social media platform Truth Social. "Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it. Now it is time, and it will be done!"

Reacting to this, Starmer said that it was a fundamental right of the people of Greenland to decide about the future of their country. "The right way to approach on issue of this seriousness is through calm discussion between the allies."

Trump has announced a 10% tariff starting Feb. 1 on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland, on any and all goods sent to the US "until such time as a Deal is reached for the complete and total purchase of Greenland". From Jun. 1, this tariff will be hiked to 25%, he added.

He said these countries "have journeyed to Greenland, for purposes unknown" and that this is a "very dangerous situation for the safety, security, and survival of our planet". "China and Russia want Greenland, and there is not a thing that Denmark can do about it," he said.  End
