MUMBAI – Northeast monsoon over south peninsular India ceased completely as of Monday, with no significant rainfall activity recorded over the region in the past two days, the India Meteorological Department said. In order for the weather department to declare complete withdrawal or cessation of monsoon, the area should not receive any rainfall for a certain number of days. Dry winds from northern India are currently prevailing over south India, which is likely to keep weather conditions dry for the next two days, the department said.

Currently, a western disturbance acting as a cyclonic circulation lies over Punjab and its neighbourhood, while another western disturbance acting as a trough lies to the northwest of the country. A third, more intense western disturbance is likely to form on Wednesday, the weather department said. Under the influence of these three systems, heavy rainfall is expected over parts of the Kashmir valley on Thursday and Friday and higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh on Friday, the department said.

The same weather systems are also likely to cause a wet spell over parts of northwest India from Thursday to Sunday. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are likely over most parts of northwest and central India till Friday, the weather department said.

Dense to very dense fog conditions are expected to prevail during the morning and night hours in parts of Punjab till Tuesday. Dense fog is expected over parts of this region on Wednesday and over parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, and Bihar till Wednesday, and over Uttar Pradesh till Tuesday, the weather department said.

Visibility drops to 0–50 metres in "very dense fog" conditions and between 51–200 metres in "dense fog" conditions.

Cold wave conditions are very likely over parts of Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday and Wednesday, the weather department said. A cold wave condition is when the minimum temperature drops to 10 degrees Celsius or less in the plains and 0 degree Celsius or lower in hilly regions, according to the weather bureau.

No significant change in minimum temperature is likely over northwest India during the next three days, and thereafter, a gradual rise by 2–4 degrees Celsius is expected during the subsequent two days. This is likely to be followed by a gradual fall by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the subsequent two days.

A gradual rise in minimum temperature by 2–4 degrees Celsius is expected over Maharashtra during the next three days and no significant change during the subsequent four days is expected. No significant change in the minimum temperature is likely over the rest of the country, the weather department said.  End
