NEW DELHI – US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Saturday met Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation. The discussions focussed on increasing collaboration in key areas, particularly in the technology sector, Gor said in a post on X, formerly called Twitter.
The meeting with the RBI governor was part of Gor's broader discussions and deliberations with Indian regulators, insitutions, and business leaders. Besides Malhotra, he met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, executives from the pharmaceutical sector, and religious faith leaders. "We're building strong momentum across trade, technology, education, energy, and resilient supply chains as the U.S.–India partnership continues to grow!" Gor wrote on X.
New Delhi and Washington continue to negotiate for a bilateral trade agreement, with both sides unable to strike a balance between each countries' demands, including differences over opening up India's sensitive farm sector. Recent remarks by US officials have also given mixed signals on the trajectory of the trade negotiations. Meanwhile, India has maintained its stance that the trade talks are progressing.
Indian goods currently attract a 50% tariff in its top export destination US, including a 25% punitive tariff due to India's economic relationship with Russia, particularly oil and defence equipment procurement from Moscow. End
