NEW DELHI – Can Fin Homes Ltd., the housing finance subsidiary of Canara Bank, Saturday reported a higher-than-expected net profit for the December quarter, thanks to a sharp increase in fee and commission income. The company's net profit rose 25% on year to INR 2.65 billion. Sequentially, the net profit was up 5.3%. Analysts had expected Can Fin Homes to report a net profit of INR 2.53 billion.
The company's fees and commission jumped up 67% on year to INR 97 million in the December quarter. Interest income rose 8.4% on year to INR 10.63 billion, which led to a total income of INR 10.73 billion, up 8.8% on year.
The housing finance company's total expenses were up just 2.1% on year and 1.9% on quarter at INR 7.32 billion for the December quarter. Employee benefit expenses increased 55% on year to INR 451 million and other expenses were up 30% at INR 273 million. Finance cost, the biggest expense, rose just 1% on year to INR 6.42 billion.
Net interest income rose to INR 4.21 billion in Oct-Dec from INR 3.45 billion a year ago and INR 4.04 billion a quarter ago. Analysts had projected the net interest income for the December quarter at INR 4.11 billion. The company's net interest margin rose to 4.14% as on Dec. 31 from 3.73% a year ago. The net interest margin was 4.02% as on Sept. 30.
The outstanding loan book of Can Fin Homes was INR 406.93 billion as of Dec. 31, up 10% on year. The company's disbursements in the December quarter were INR 27.27 billion, higher than INR 18.79 billion a year ago and INR 25.45 billion a quarter ago.
The company's asset quality remained stable in the December quarter. The gross non-performing assets ratio was 0.92% as of Dec. 31, down from 0.94% as of Sept. 30 but was unchanged from a year ago. The net NPA ratio was 0.49% at the end of December against 0.48% a quarter ago and 0.50% a year ago.
For Apr-Dec, Can Fin Homes reported a net profit of INR 7.40 billion against INR 6.23 billion a year ago. The company's total income for the period was INR 31.43 billion against INR 28.80 billion a year ago. Shares of Can Fin Homes Friday closed 0.2% higher at INR 919.40 on the National Stock Exchange.
