NEW DELHI – India's free trade agreement with the European Union is likely to be the "mother of all trade deals" signed by India, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said Friday. All 27 EU states have expressed strong optimism towards the trade deal, Goyal added.
The two sides aim to conclude the negotiations for the agreement by Jan. 27, or at least before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, another official from the commerce ministry said. The EU leader is India's chief guest for Republic Day celebrations.
New Delhi will ensure protection of India's interests under the trade deal with the EU, the official said on condition of anonymity. Be it protection of the farm sector or the iron and steel sector from the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, all interests will be safeguarded, the official added.
India and the EU have made strong progress in negotiations and have closed 20 out of 24 chapters under the trade pact, but the two sides are yet to iron out differences over the EU's carbon tax. Brussels fully implemented its Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism on Jan. 1, which entails duty collection based on reported carbon content in the shipments entering the EU. End
