MUMBAI – The water level in 166 key reservoirs of the country was 134.915 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, which is 73.5% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The water level was up 6.8% from a year ago and 23.9% higher than the normal storage for the period, which is the average storage for the past 10 years, according to the data.
In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 13.298 billion cubic metres, which is 67% of the total live storage capacity. In the same period last year, the water level was 40.5% of the live storage capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.
In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 15.441 billion cubic metres, nearly 71% of the total live storage capacity against nearly 66.5% in the corresponding period last year. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.
The water level in the western region was 31.907 billion cubic metres. This is 83.8% of the total live storage capacity, against nearly 80% last year. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.
In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 36.489 billion cubic metres as of Thursday. This is over 75% of the total live storage capacity, compared with nearly 72% a year ago.
The water level in the southern region was 37.780 billion cubic metres, over 63% of the total live storage capacity, the data showed. At this time last year, the water level in the region was nearly 70% of the total live storage capacity.
Of the 166 reservoirs in the country, 157 reported more than 80% of normal storage and nine were at 80% or below the normal storage. Of these nine, none had storage below 50% of the normal. During the week ended Wednesday, India received 0.9 millimetres of rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, 73% below the normal of 3.5 millimetre for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department.
