NEW DELHI – India aims to conclude the negotiations for a free trade agreement with the European Union before leaders of both the sides meet on Jan. 26, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said Thursday. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has been invited as India's chief guest for the Republic Day celebrations.

Both sides have concluded 20 out of 24 chapters under the proposed trade deal and are engaged online to conclude the remaining subjects, Agrawal said. However, the stickiest topic of EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism is still left to be ironed out, another commerce ministry official said. Brussels fully implemented its Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism on Jan. 1, which entails duty collection based on reported carbon content in the shipments entering the EU.

The trade deal, which is very close to conclusion, excludes both sides' sensitive agri-related subjects, the commerce official said on condition of anonymity. If concluded, this will be India's fourth trade deal this financial year, after the ones with UK, Oman, and New Zealand. India is also hopeful that these three FTAs will be implemented in 2026, Agrawal said.  End
