India receives 73% below normal rainfall at 0.9 mm in week to Wed, says IMD

MUMBAI – India received 0.9 millimetres of rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, 73% below the normal of 3.5 millimetres for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department. From Jan. 1 to Jan. 14, the country received 1.8 millimetres of rainfall, 73% below the normal of 6.7 millimetres, the data showed.
Three homogeneous regions in the country received below-normal rainfall during the week while one received above normal showers. East and northeast India received no rain while northwest India received 99% below normal rain at 0.0 millimetres. Central India also received 99% below normal rains during the week ended Wednesday. On the other hand, south peninsular India received 113% above normal rainfall at 4.7 millimetres, according to the weather department.
Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, 23 did not receive any rainfall and seven received "large deficient" rainfall. One subdivision received "deficient" rainfall and another received "excess" showers in the week ended Wednesday. Four subdivisions received "large excess" rains. End
