MUMBAI – Conditions are favourable for the cessation of northeast monsoon rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, and the adjoining areas of Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and south interior Karnataka in the next two days, the India Meteorological Department said. The complete withdrawal of the northeast monsoon is expected to keep up with its normal date. The northeast monsoon usually withdraws from the country by the end of December, with a standard deviation of around 14–15 days, scientists at the IMD Mumbai Regional Centre said.

The northeast monsoon had set in over the southern parts of the country on Oct. 16, immediately after a delayed withdrawal of the southwest monsoon.

The weather department has warned of dense to very dense fog conditions during the morning and night hours in parts of Uttarakhand, Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, and Chandigarh till Friday. Similar conditions are also likely in parts of west Uttar Pradesh till Tuesday, and in parts of east Uttar Pradesh from Friday to Tuesday, the department said.

Dense fog conditions are expected in most parts of northwest and some parts of northeast and east India till Jan. 21, the weather bureau said. Visibility drops to 0–50 metres in "very dense fog" conditions and between 51 and 200 metres in "dense fog" conditions.

Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are likely in parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab till Thursday, the weather department said. Cold wave conditions are expected in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand on Thursday and Friday, in west Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, and in Odisha from Thursday to Saturday, the department said.

Cold day conditions are expected in pockets of Haryana, Chandigarh, and Punjab on Thursday, the department said. A cold wave condition is when the minimum temperature drops to 10 degrees Celsius or less for the plains and 0 degree Celsius or lower for hilly regions, according to the weather bureau. Cold day conditions are associated with a fall in maximum temperatures, typically occurring due to persistent low clouding. A cold day occurs when the maximum temperature during the day is at least 4.5 degrees Celsius below normal.

Minimum temperatures in northwest India are expected to gradually rise in the next five days, the weather bureau said. No significant change in minimum temperature is likely over central India in the next three days, with a gradual rise of 2–4 degrees Celsius seen in the subsequent four days. In east India, no significant change in minimum temperature is expected in the next four days, and a gradual rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius is likely in the subsequent three days.

In Maharashtra, no major change in minimum temperature is likely in the next 24 hours, after which it is likely to gradually fall by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the subsequent two days, before rising again in the same range in the subsequent four days. No significant change in minimum temperature is expected in Gujarat for the next 24 hours, and thereafter a gradual rise of 2–3 degrees Celsius is seen in the subsequent four days.

No significant change in minimum temperature is expected over the rest of the country, the weather department said.  End
