NEW DELHI – Wholesale automobile sales in December zoomed 33% on year to 2.53 million units, driven by a robust increase in domestic despatches, while demand in export markets retained their momentum, data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed Tuesday. Growth in despatches in the final month of 2025 remained ubiquitous across segments, as companies continued to kick up production to keep up with increasing demand ahead of potential price hikes.
Domestic wholesale sales of two-wheelers in December rose 39% on year to 1.54 million units, while their exports grew 25% on year to 469,501 units. Production of India's highest-selling automobile segment grew 40% on year to 2.14 million units. Sales growth of scooters continued to exceed that of motorcycles in domestic and overseas markets in December. In line with this trend, companies stepped up production of scooters at a faster clip. For context, nearly 60% of two-wheelers sold in India are motorcycles.
Companies sold 349,170 passenger vehicles to dealerships in India last month, up 29% on year, while exports fell 12% on year to 69,235 units. In the domestic market, sales of passenger cars grew faster than those of the in-vogue utility vehicles. The same trend was reflected in production as well. While companies made 394,361 passenger vehicles in December, a faster growth was registered by the passenger car segment. Utility vehicles dominate Indian roads, with a market share of 62%.
Domestic despatches of three-wheelers grew 17% on year to 61,924 units in December, with almost all sub-segments registering year-on-year growth, except electric rickshaws. Exports of three-wheelers grew 60% on year last month. Production in this segment increased 40% on year to 101,632 units.

Overall, commpanies produced a total of 8.84 million vehicles in the December quarter, up over 16% on year. In terms of sales, 7.48 million units were sold in the domestic market, reflecting growth of nearly 18% on year. Overseas sales during the quarter rose almost 25% on year to 1.75 million units, the data showed.
In the passenger vehicles segment, total production in Oct-Dec rose just over 19% on year to 1.4 million units. About 1.28 million units were sold in India during the three months, up nearly 21% on year. A total of 225,046 units were sold abroad during the quarter, up almost 12% on year. The utility vehicles segment was the star performer during the December quarter in terms of sales growth –- domestic sales in the category grew 21% on year to 852,498 units and exports increased 24% on year to 112,526 units.
The passenger vehicle segment clocked its highest-ever December-quarter domestic sales in 2025-26, according to the press release. "This robust performance was supported by improved affordability following the GST rate reduction, benefits from personal income tax relief, successive repo rate cuts by RBI (Reserve Bank of India) easing financing costs, and a renewed sense of optimism among buyers, which together helped in boosting consumer demand in this festive quarter," the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said.
The passenger vehicle segment also registered record-high exports during the December quarter, as per the release.
In the two-wheeler segment, total production in Oct-Dec grew 15% on year to 6.81 million units. Around 5.70 million units were sold in India during the quarter, up 17% on year, and 1.37 million were sold in overseas markets, up over 24%.
Companies in India also recorded 35% growth in production of three-wheelers during the December quarter at 341,163 units. Domestic sales in the category grew 14% on year to 215,211 during the quarter and exports surged 70% on year to 127,460.
In the nine months ended December, companies in India produced a total of 25.37 million vehicles, reflecting growth of over 9% on year. Despatches to domestic dealerships in Apr-Dec increased over 6% on year to 20.62 million units and sales overseas jumped 25% on year to 4.89 million units. Passenger vehicle sales in India during the nine months rose 6% on year to 3.3 million units, the data showed. End
