NEW DELHI – US President Donald Trump has imposed 25% tariff on any and all countries trading with Iran effective immediately. "This Order is final and conclusive. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social on Tuesday. Iran's major trading partners include China, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, and India, and the move could further steepen the already high tariffs on Indian goods to the US.

Trump's announcement comes as a retaliation to Tehran's severe crackdown on protestors in the country, hundreds of whom have been killed. An ongoing communication shutdown imposed by Iranian authorities has mostly isolated people in the country from the outside world. Nationwide protests started in Iran around December-end in response to economic and political issues in the country, including decade-high inflation and poor governance.

India and Iran share political and economic ties that date back to a friendship treaty in 1950, and since then, bilateral cooperation has expanded across trade, connectivity, and high-level engagement. India, which has remained among Iran's top five trading partners, had total bilateral trade of $1.85 billion in FY25, down 20.8% on year. India's exports to Iran include rice, tea, sugar, and pharmaceuticals.

The Indian government, in May 2024, had signed a 10-year lease agreement with its Iranian counterpart to develop and operate the Chabahar Port of Iran, to offer an alternative route to India for trade with Iran, Afghanistan, Eurasia, and Central Asian Republics. The Chabahar Port is an important component of the International North–South Transport Corridor initiated by India, Russia, and Iran, in 2000. It is a multi-modal network of ship, road, and rail that connects St. Petersburg to Mumbai through the Chabahar Port and the Bandar Abbas Port through the Caspian Sea.

The US currently levies 50% tariff on India, including 25% as penalty for buying crude oil from Russia. It remains to be seen how the 25% tariff on countries trading with Iran will play out for India.  End

US$1 = INR 90.15
