NEW DELHI – The first-year premium income of life insurance companies in India rose 39.5% on year to INR 421.51 billion in December, data released by the Life Insurance Council Friday showed. In November, life insurance companies' premium income was INR 311.20 billion.
Life Insurance Corp. of India led the rise in premium income in December with a 57.5% on year increase to INR 212.94 billion. Private life insurance companies' premiums were up 24.9% at INR 208.57 billion.
LIC's market share in December decreased slightly from November but improved significantly from a year ago. Its market share was 50.5% in December, as against 51.0% in November and 44.8% in December last year.
Among private insurers, SBI Life Insurance Co.'s first-year premium income rose 19.4% on year to INR 63.37 billion in December and that of HDFC Life Insurance Co. rose 14.6% to INR 31.08 billion. ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co. reported a 25.1% increase in premium income in December at INR 19.45 billion.
Insurance companies' premium income during Apr-Dec was INR 3.11 trillion, up 13% on year.
