NEW DELHI – Banks' loans rose 14.5% on year as of Dec. 31, the quickest pace in 18 months, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India Friday. Deposit growth also picked up in the last fornight of 2025, recovering from a three-year low pace of 9.4% as of Dec. 15. Deposits grew 12.7% on year to INR 248.60 trillion as of Dec. 31, up INR 7.28 trillion from a fortnight ago.

Banks' loans were at INR 203.23 trillion as of Dec. 31, up INR 6.28 trillion on fortnight. Credit growth picked up in recent months, driven by the festival season and the consumption boost from lower goods and services tax rates. Bank credit was up 12.0% as of Dec. 15. The last time credit growth was higher was at the end of June 2024.

After the government amended the banking act, the definition of 'fortnight' has been changed from a Saturday-to-Friday cycle to a clearly defined two-part monthly period--either the 1st to the 15th of each month or the 16th to the last day of the month, both days inclusive.

Investments by banks increased 4.4% on year as of Dec. 31 to INR 68.85 trillion. This was INR 36.36 billion higher from the previous fortnight. End
