--Minister Rijiju: To hold Budget session of Parliament Jan 28-Apr 2

NEW DELHI – The Budget Session of Parliament will be held from Jan. 28 to Apr. 2, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju said Friday in a post on X, formerly Twitter. "On the recommendation of the Govt of India, Hon'ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu ji has approved the summoning of both the Houses of Parliament for the Budget Session 2026," he said.

The Budget Session generally commences with the President's address to the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament. The Finance Minister traditionally presents the Union Budget on Feb. 1. The Economic Survey is generally presented a day prior to the Budget presentation. Although the government has not officially announced the dates, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to table the Budget for 2026-27 (Apr-Mar)--her ninth Budget--on Feb. 1, and the Economic Survey for 2025-26 a day ahead, on Jan. 31.

Parliament will be adjourned for a recess on Feb. 13 to enable the department-related parliamentary standing committees to examine the demands for grants and make reports relating to their ministries and departments. The session will resume after the recess on Mar. 9 and conclude on Apr. 2, Rijiju said.

During the first part of the Budget Session, the two Houses hold detailed discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the President's address, followed by a discussion on the Union Budget. During the second part of the Budget Session, the major focus is on the demands for grants for ministries, apart from the government's legislative agenda.

The Winter Session of Parliament, which concluded on Dec. 19, was packed with important legislations, including the Health Security Se National Security cess bill, the Central Excise (Amendment) bill, Sabka Bima Sabki Raksha (Amendment of Insurance Laws) bill, and the Viksit Bharat—Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), or the VB—G RAM G bill, that replaces the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005.  End
