NEW DELHI – Tata Steel Ltd. Wednesday said its India operations manufactured a record-high quantity of crude steel in the December quarter, at 6.34 million tonnes, up over 11% from 5.69 million tonnes produced in the corresponding quarter a year ago. Production growth has been attributed to higher output at Tata Steel's Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar factories.
"Improved production led to 'best-ever quarterly' deliveries and Tata Steel India crossed the '6 million ton' mark for the first time," the company said in an exchange filing. Its domestic deliveries grew 14% on year and 9% on quarter to 6.04 million tonnes in the December quarter, primarily aided by strong sales in the domestic market.
The data for India operations, which are provisional, include standalone production by Tata Steel and Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd. on a proforma basis. In Apr-Dec, Tata Steel produced 17.23 million tonnes of crude steel in India, compared with 16.23 million tonnes a year ago.
Tata Steel's Netherlands unit's production of liquid steel fell to 1.68 million tonnes in the December quarter, down nearly 5% on year. Its deliveries in the region fell 8.5% on year to 1.40 million tonnes.
In Thailand, its steel production stood at 310,000 tonnes, up from 260,000 tonnes produced a year ago, due to stronger domestic rebar sales. Deliveries in the region stood at 290,000 tonnes, also higher on year.
In the UK, the company is serving its customers through the downstream processing of purchased substrate. "Enabling works for the EAF (electric arc furnace) project have advanced and the site landscape is being reshaped for the next phase of construction," the company said. The company in September 2024 had ended traditional steelmaking at its Port Talbot, UK, plant as part of a major shift to greener, low-carbon steel production using electric arc furnaces. In the December quarter, its UK plant recorded deliveries of 520,000 tonnes of steel, down from 570,000 tonnes delivered a year ago.
For the September quarter, Tata Steel had, on a consolidated basis, reported a net profit of INR 31.02 billion on a revenue of INR 586.89 billion. Wednesday, its shares fell 1.3% on the National Stock Exchange to INR 183.80. End
