AHMEDABAD – Torrent Power Ltd. will permanently close its nine-decade-old 362-megawatt coal-based thermal power plant at Sabarmati in Ahmedabad next year to make way for a sports complex, a senior central government official told Informist Wednesday.

"There will be a sports complex and stadium coming up instead, with Ahmedabad officially selected to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030," the official said. The Sabarmati coal-based thermal power plant, also known as the AMGEN power plant, is operated by Torrent Power and was originally commissioned in 1934. It accounts for over 7% of Torrent Power's total power generation capacity and supplies electricity to users in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

Talk of Torrent Power shutting down has been circulating for years. In its annual reports for 2019-20 (Apr-Mar) and FY21, Torrent Power said that the plant may have to be phased out by December 2022, as "stricter" emission norms would require "significant" capital expenditure and increase electricity costs.

However, Torrent Power continued to operate the power plant. "They have run it longer than they expected to run it, and with 3-4 years left, they will be shutting it down finally," the official said. "They would be servicing the electricity needs of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar from the alternative plants they have."

Situated next to the Sardar Patel Sports Complex and the Narendra Modi cricket stadium, the government proposes to expand sports infrastructure in the city to host multiple events at the current power plant site. The plant shutdown will reduce pollution in the city. Ahmedabad is also seeking to bid to host the 2036 Olympics.

In its post-September quarter earnings analyst call, the company's management said it is targeting renewable capacity additions of 500–600 MW in FY26, of which 360 MW has already been commissioned. The company also said it has secured a letter of award from MP Power Management Co. Ltd. for a 1,600-MW coal-based thermal project in Madhya Pradesh at a tariff of INR 5.829 per kilowatt hour, with a 25-year power supply period.

In addition to the Ahmedabad plant, the company operates a 1,147.5 MW gas-based plant in Surat, with an additional 382.5 MW of capacity nearby. It also has another 1,200 MW gas-based power plant at Dahej, which typically operates below capacity due to low demand for the high-cost natural gas used as fuel.

Last month, Torrent Power also signed a long-term sale and purchase agreement with JERA Co., Inc., Japan's largest power generation company, for the supply of up to 0.27 million tonnes per annum of liquefied natural gas for 10 years beginning in 2027. The company is also reported to be in talks to acquire Larsen & Toubro's thermal power business.

Torrent Power reported a consolidated net profit of INR 7.31 billion for the September quarter on revenue of INR 79.06 billion. On Wednesday, the company's shares ended at INR 1,396.80 on the National Stock Exchange, down 0.9% from the previous close.  End
