MUMBAI – The well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression in the early hours of Wednesday, which is expected to strengthen further into a deep depression in the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department said. This weather system is likely to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu on Friday and Saturday.

The same weather system is also likely to cause heavy rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu from Thursday to Sunday and over Kerala on Saturday, the weather department said.

Cold day to severe cold day conditions are likely to prevail in parts of east Rajasthan till Thursday, while cold day conditions are likely over most parts of northwest India and some parts of east India till Saturday, the weather department said.

Cold wave conditions are very likely over parts of Himachal Pradesh, east Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Jharkhand on Thursday and Friday, over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi from Thursday to Saturday and over Rajasthan from Friday to Monday, the weather department said.

A cold wave condition is when the minimum temperature drops to 10 degrees Celsius or less for plains and 0 degree Celsius or lower for hilly regions, according to the weather bureau. Cold day conditions are associated with a fall in maximum temperatures, typically occurring due to persistent low clouding. A cold day occurs when the maximum temperature during the day is at least 4.5 degrees Celsius below normal.

Dense to very dense fog conditions are very likely to prevail in the morning hours over parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and east Rajasthan from Thursday to Saturday, over some parts of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, and over parts of west Rajasthan on Thursday.

Dense fog conditions are likely in most parts of northwest and northeast India and some parts of east and central India, the weather department said.

A gradual rise in minimum temperature is likely over central India by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next three days, the weather department said. No significant change is likely over east India during the next three days, after which, a slight rise by about 2 degrees Celsius for the subsequent two days is expected.

No significant change in minimum temperature over Gujarat is likely for the next three days and a gradual rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius for the subsequent four days is expected, the weather bureau said. In Maharashtra, no significant change in minimum temperature is expected in the next 24 hours, after which a gradual rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius is expected, the weather department said.

No significant change in minimum temperature is likely over northwest and northeast India, the bureau said.  End
