NEW DELHI - The number of e-way bills generated rose to an all-time high in December, buoyed by the goods and services tax cuts that came into effect from Sept. 22. E-way bills generated rose 23.5% on year to 138.39 million in December, according to data from the Goods and Services Tax Network.

The pace of rise in e-way bills generation moderated from 27.6% in November, which was the highest in over two years. It was still among the higher rates of growth in the current financial year. Sequentially, e-way bills generated rose 6.5% from 129.90 million in November.

An increase in e-way bills generally suggests GST collections would be robust in the following month as most transactions are reflected in next month's collections. India's GST collections grew 6.1% on year to INR 1.746 trillion in December, excluding cess collections. Including cess, the government collected INR 1.791 trillion as GST, up 1.3% on year.

An e-way bill is a GST document for the transport of goods worth more than INR 50,000 within or outside a state. The number of e-way bills generated is considered a lead indicator of economic activity and domestic trade.  End
