NEW DELHI – Venezuela has declared a national emergency after explosions and low-flying aircraft were reported in Caracas, the south-American country's capital, several media reported. Venezuela accused the US of attacking civilian and military installations in multiple states and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro termed the attacks an attempt by the US to take his country's oil and minerals.

BBC's US partner CBS News reported, citing US officials, that US President Donald Trump ordered strikes on sites inside Venezuela, including military facilities.

Venezuela's government called on its supporters to take to the streets, The Associated Press reported. The statement said that President Maduro had "ordered all national defense plans to be implemented" and declared "a state of external disturbance." That state of emergency gives Maduro the power to suspend people's rights and expand the role of the armed forces, AP reported.

The attacks come after weeks of Trump accusing Maduro of "emptying his prisons and insane asylums" and "forcing" its inmates to migrate to the US. Trump has also accused the Venezuelan president of using oil money to fund drug-related crime. Since September, the US has launched 30 strikes on what it says are drug-smuggling boats, targeting vessels in the Pacific and the Caribbean, the BBC said. More than 110 people have been killed since the US carried out its first attack on a boat in international waters on Sept. 2, according to the BBC.  End
