India Apr-Dec coal output from commercial mines up 10% YoY, dispatches up 7%

NEW DELHI – Coal output from captive and commercial mines rose 5.75% on year to 19.48 million tonnes, while dispatches during the month were 18.02 million tonnes, reflecting sustained operational momentum in 2025–26 (Apr-Mar), the Ministry of Coal said in a statement released Friday.

 

For the December quarter, cumulative coal production from captive and commercial mines reached 54.14 million tonnes, with dispatches totalling 50.61 million tonnes. The quarter registered a 5.35% on-year growth in production, underscoring consistent performance across the sector, the release said.

 

Cumulatively, coal production from captive and commercial mines during Apr-Dec has grown 9.72% on year, while dispatches increased 6.98%. The data points to improved operational efficiency and better utilisation of mining capacity, the release said.

 

The ministry attributed the improved performance to a combination of strategic policy measures, close performance monitoring, and sustained support to stakeholders, which have helped speed up operational approvals and facilitate capacity expansion. These interventions have contributed to higher output and more stable dispatches so far this fiscal, it said.

 

Going ahead, the ministry said it remains focused on creating a stable and performance-driven environment for captive and commercial coal mining through continued policy facilitation and coordinated engagement with stakeholders. The objective is to ensure reliable coal availability, support uninterrupted operations across key sectors and meet the country's growing energy demand, in line with the long-term national goal of Viksit Bharat 2047.  End
