MUMBAI – The Nifty 50 ended Friday's session at a record closing high after rising consistently towards the end of the day's trade. The 50-stock index rose to a record high of 26340 points in the final minutes, closing at 26328.55 points, up 182 points or 0.7%. The index had hit the previous intra-day high of 26325.80 points on Dec. 1.
The headline index closed higher for the third successive session, ending in positive territory for the second week in a row. Though Coal India was the top performer in the 50-stock index, the day's gains were driven primarily by financial services stocks and oil and gas companies.
The BSE Sensex closed at 85762.01 points, up 573.41 points. It is still about 400 points shy of its all-time high of 86159.02 points, also recorded on Dec. 1. India VIX, the market's fear gauge, ended almost 3% higher at 9.4500. It rose after falling for three consecutive sessions. It has declined almost 16% in the last 30 days.
Shares of Coal India ended almost 7% higher after the company allowed foreign coal buyers to participate directly in its single-window transport-mode-agnostic e-auctions to buy coal. Shares of fast-moving consumer goods major ITC fell the most after brokerages downgraded their recommendations and target prices after the government's decision to impose high excise duty on cigarettes. "ITC will see challenges in passing on the steep hike in excise duty which will impact volume growth and dent earnings over the medium term," said Naveen Kulkarni, chief investment officer at Axis Securities. "So, ITC will have a challenging FY27." Shares of ITC ended nearly 4% lower at INR 350.05. The stock has declined 13% in two days.
In the broader market, all the small-cap as well as mid-cap indices ended 0.6–1.0% higher. All the small-cap indices ended in positive territory after falling in the previous session, while all the mid-cap indices ended higher for the third straight session.
Among sectoral indices, the Nifty Energy, which closed over 2% higher at 36275.65 points, was the top performer. It closed higher for the third session running, gaining over 4% in this period. Along with the 50-stock index, the Nifty Private Bank, Nifty Auto, Nifty Metal, Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Bank, and Nifty infrastructure indices also notched up fresh record highs Friday. Barring the Nifty FMCG, all sectoral indices ended the session up.
Among automobile stocks, electric bus maker companies such as Olectra Greentech and JBM Auto gained. Olectra Greentech had said Thursday that it has begun commercial operations of its greenfield electric bus manufacturing facility at Seetharampur, near Hyderabad. The facility has an annual per-shift production capacity of 2,500 buses. Shares of Olectra Greentech closed 4% higher at INR 1,248. Those of JBM Auto closed 6.6% higher at INR 666.60.
Shares of Devyani International rose during the session after Sapphire Foods India's board approved its merger into the company through a share-swap mechanism. According to the scheme of arrangement for the merger, 177 equity shares of face value INR 1 of Devyani International will be issued for every 100 shares of face value INR 2 of Sapphire Foods India. Shares of Devyani International ended 0.4% higher at INR 148.07. Shares of Sapphire Foods India closed 4% lower at INR 252. The Sapphire Foods stock fell after closing higher the previous two sessions, when it gained over 6%.
Indian Bank ended 3.5% higher at INR 861.40. Shares of the state-owned bank rose after its gross advances rose nearly 15% on year to INR 6.40 trillion as of Dec. 31. Shares of Force Motors ended nearly 2% higher at INR 21,230 after the company's December total sales jumped nearly 50% on year to 3,048 units. The stock was up for the sixth session. It has gained nearly 16% in this period.
