MUMBAI – The Food and Agriculture Organization's All Rice Price Index averaged 101 points in December, up 4.3% on month, though it fell 15.2% on year. The on-month increase was largely supported by the strengthening of the Glutinous rice prices, which rose the most in December.

The Glutinous rice price index surged by 16.1% to a 15-month-high, underpinned by Chinese purchases and, in particular, by bullish sentiment in Thailand, the release said. In December, the Glutinous rice price index was 111, up nearly 4% from last year and 16% from November.

For Japonica and Aromatic rice, monthly price increases were demand-driven. The Japonica rice price index in December was 95.8, up 3.3% from last month, while the Aromatic rice price index was 94.7, up 2.3% from November. Meanwhile, Indica quotations recovered by 4.3% on month to 102.7, the release said.

India's Pusa Basmati variety remained unchanged at $925.0 in December from the previous month. The average price of 25% broken non-basmati rice exported from India rose to $332.9 per tonne in December from $330.4 per tonne in November and that of 5% broken non-basmati rice rose to $347.7 per tonne from $344.2 per tonne, the release showed. The price of 5% parboiled rice from India was up at $355.2 a tonne from $350.3 per tonne in November. "African demand and government procurement also underpinned quotations in India, despite a depreciation of the rupee," according to the report.

The price of Thailand's A1 Super rice variety rose to $380.8 a tonne in December from $339.3 per tonne in November while that of Thailand's 25% broken variety rose to $414.3 per tonne from $361.7 per tonne. The benchmark Thai 100% B white rice rebounded to a seven-month-high, buoyed by the price stabilisation measures and government-to-government sales agreements that were announced in November, the release said. Reduced harvest pressure and a further appreciation of the baht against the US dollar provided additional upward momentum to Thailand's rice prices, it said.

The price of Vietnam's 25% broken rice fell to $338.7 per tonne in December from $340.3 per tonne in November. "Conversely, quotations were steady to weaker in Vietnam, weighed by low demand and by news that the January 2026 lifting of the import ban on non-specialty rice in the Philippines would come in tandem with higher import tariffs and the issuance of licences to import a total of 500,000 tonnes," the release said.

Pakistan's 5% broken rice rose to $354.9 per tonne from $340.4 in November while basmati rice fell to $985.4 per tonne in December from $1,033.9 per tonne last month. "Influenced by trends in other origins and against a backdrop of logistical constraints posed by transport strikes and road closures, prices also moved up in Pakistan," the release said.  End
