MUMBAI – Dense to very dense fog conditions are expected to continue during the night and early morning hours over Odisha, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi till Monday, the India Meteorological Department said. Dense fog is also likely over most parts of northwest and northeast and some parts of east and central India till Jan. 7, the department said.
Visibility in "very dense fog" conditions drops to 0–50 metres and in "dense fog" conditions, between 51 and 200 metres. In the past 24 hours, very dense fog was recorded in some parts of Uttarakhand, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Haryana, and Meghalaya, the department said.

Cold wave conditions are likely in some parts of Himachal Pradesh from Friday to Sunday, over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi from Saturday to Monday, over Rajasthan on Monday and Tuesday, and over Telangana on Thursday, the bureau said.
A cold wave condition is when the minimum temperature drops to 10 degrees Celsius or less for plains and 0 degree Celsius or less for hilly regions, according to the weather bureau. Cold day conditions are associated with a fall in maximum temperatures, typically occurring due to persistent low clouding. A cold day occurs when the maximum temperature during the day is at least 4.5 degrees Celsius below normal.
Currently, a western disturbance lies over Pakistan and the adjoining Afghanistan, which is likely to cause heavy rainfall or snowfall over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad till Thursday and light to moderate rainfall or snowfall over parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand till Friday, the weather bureau said. The weather system is also likely to cause light to moderate rainfall over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh till Thursday and over west Uttar Pradesh and Delhi on Thursday, the bureau said.
A gradual rise in minimum temperatures is very likely over northwest India by 2–4 degrees Celsius in the next two days, after which it is likely to fall by 2–4 degrees Celsius in the subsequent three days, the weather department said. Minimum temperatures in central India are expected to gradually rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next three days, and thereafter fall by 2–4 degrees Celsius in the subsequent four days, it said.
In east India, the minimum temperature is expected to gradually rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next three days. No significant change in minimum temperature is likely over Maharashtra in the next two days, after which it could rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the subsequent four days. Thereafter, minimum temperatures in south Maharashtra could rise further by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the subsequent four days, the bureau said.
In Gujarat, no major change in minimum temperature is seen in the next 24 hours, after which it could fall by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the subsequent two days, before rising again in the same range in the subsequent five days.
