NEW DELHI – Banks' loans rose 12.0% on year as on Dec. 15, the quickest pace in over 14 months, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India Wednesday. Deposits were up 9.4% on year as of Dec. 15, the slowest rise since December 2022.
Banks' loans were at INR 196.95 trillion as on Dec. 15, up INR 1.65 trillion on fortnight. Credit growth has picked up in recent months, driven by the festival season and the consumption boost from lower goods and services tax rates. Bank credit was up 11.5% on year as on Nov. 28 and 11.7% as on Dec. 12.
After the government amended the banking act, the definition of 'fortnight' has been changed from a Saturday-to-Friday cycle to a clearly defined two-part monthly period--either the 1st to the 15th of each month or the 16th to the last day of the month, both days inclusive.
Deposits were at INR 241.32 trillion as on Dec. 15, down INR 1.28 trillion from a fortnight ago. Deposits were up 10.2% on year as on Nov. 28 and 9.7% as on Dec. 12.
Investments by banks increased 5.0% on year as of Dec. 15, slower than 5.3?ortnight ago. Investments by banks were at INR 68.81 trillion, down INR 51.14 billion from the previous fortnight.
