NEW DELHI – A delegation of Indian officials will visit Russia at the end of February after the Budget Session of Parliament for the next round of negotiations with the Eurasian Economic Union on a free trade agreement, a commerce ministry official said Wednesday. The Eurasian Economic Union, comprising Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Armenia, had initiated FTA talks with India in August.

The Eurasian Union has too many non-tariff barriers, which need to be sorted before India takes the FTA talks forward, the official said. There is also ambiguity in terms of the application of European and Russian regulations on some product lines, the official added.

The two sides had initially agreed to explore a trade deal in 2021, but the discussions stalled as Russia's priorities shifted after the Ukraine war. The deal was back on the table after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Moscow in 2024.  End
