MUMBAI – The benchmark Nifty 50 ended largely flat Tuesday after closing lower the past three sessions. Both the headline indices moved in a thin range in the absence of key triggers amid reduced foreign investor participation due to the year-end holiday season. A fall in information technology and consumer services stocks kept the Nifty 50 under pressure while gains in banking and financial services stocks cushioned the fall of the index.

The Nifty 50 settled at 25938.85 points, down 3.25 points. The BSE Sensex closed at 84675.08 points, down 20.46 points. The 50-stock index closed below its psychologically crucial level of 26000 points for the second successive session but is just a little over 61 points away from the key level. The Sensex closed lower for the fifth session in a row. India VIX, the fear gauge of Dalal Street, ended slightly in the red at 9.6775.

The recent weakness in the market can be attributed to renewed selling pressure from foreign institutional investors and to global uncertainty, ICICI Securities said in a retail equity research report. So far this year, foreign investors have offloaded $17.59 billion in the Indian equity market, up sharply from nearly $755 million offloaded a year ago, according to data from the National Securities Depository.

All the broader equity indices closed lower. The small-cap indices closed 0.2–0.4% lower and the mid-cap indices ended 0.2% lower. All the small-cap indices closed down for the third session while the Nifty Midcap 150 ended lower for the fourth session running.

The performance of the sectoral indices was mixed with the Nifty Metal being the top gainer, up 2%. The metal index rose again after Monday's blip, when it had fallen after rising for seven sessions. The Nifty Auto ended 1% higher after closing in the red for the previous three sessions. The Nifty IT and the Nifty Consumer Durables were the worst performers among the sectoral indices, ending almost 1% lower. "Sector-wise, while auto stocks gained on robust IIP (Index of Industrial Production) data, metal stocks gained due to higher metal prices, enabling better realisations," Vinod Nair, head of research, Geojit Investments, said in a note.

IT stocks such as Infosys and HCL Technologies ended 1–1.4% lower. Barring LTIMindtree, all constituents of the Nifty IT index closed lower. Shares of consumer services companies also ended lower. Eternal closed 2% lower after media reports said the chief financial officer of Eternal's quick-commerce arm Blinkit had resigned.

Most constituents of the Nifty Auto ended the session higher. Shares of Hero MotoCorp gained nearly 3%. The stock was the top gainer among automobile stocks. Shares of Gujarat Kidney, which were listed Tuesday, ended over 8% lower from its issue price. The stock had opened at a 5% premium to its issue price of INR 114 per share but ended at INR 104.65.
