MUMBAI – The water level in 166 key reservoirs of the country fell around 3% from the previous week to 147.040 billion cubic metres as of Friday, which is 80.1% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The water level was up 6.8% from a year ago and over 23% higher than the normal storage for the period, which is the average storage for the past 10 years, according to the data.
In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 14.779 billion cubic metres, which is around 75% of the total live storage capacity. In the same period last year, the water level was over 46% of the live storage capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.
In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 16.474 billion cubic metres, nearly 76% of the total live storage capacity and higher than 69.4% in the corresponding period last year. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.
The water level in the western region was 33.753 billion cubic metres. This is almost 89% of the total live storage capacity, against 86% last year. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.
In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 39.948 billion cubic metres as of Friday. This is 82.2% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 76.5% a year ago.
The water level in the southern region was 42.087 billion cubic metres, 76.1% of the total live storage capacity, the data showed. At this time last year, the water level in the region was 78.4% of the total live storage capacity.
Of the 166 reservoirs in the country, 159 reported more than 80% of normal storage and seven were at 80% or below of normal storage. Of these seven, none had storage below 50% of the normal. During the week ended Wednesday, India received 1.0 millimetres of rainfall, 65?low the normal of 2.8 millimetres, according to the India Meteorological Department. End
