NEW DELHI – The Ministry of Railway has notified a hike in train ticket prices by 1 paise per kilometre for ordinary class beyond a journey of 215 km, and 2 paise per km for non-air conditioning and air conditioning classes of all mail or express trains. As a result, for a 500 km journey in non-AC mail or express coaches, passengers will pay about INR 10 extra.
This is the second hike in railway ticket prices in less than six months. The railway ministry had hiked fares across AC, sleeper and second classes after five years effective from Jul. 1. "The Railways has rationalised its passenger fare structure with effect from 26 December 2025, with the objective of balancing affordability for passengers and sustainability of operations," the ministry said in a release Thursday.
Like the last time, it has kept suburban fares and monthly seasonal fares unchanged.
For distances from 216 km to 750 km, the fare increases by INR 5, the minsitry said. For longer journeys, the increase is applied in steps — INR 10 for distances between 751 km and 1,250 km, INR 15 for distances between 1,251 km and 1,750 km, and INR 20 for distances between 1,751 km and 2,250 km. Fares for sleeper class ordinary and first class ordinary have been revised uniformly at the rate of 1 paise per km for non-suburban journeys, ensuring a gradual and limited increase in ticket prices, it said.
The revised fares are applicable only to tickets booked on or after Friday. Tickets booked prior to this date will not attract any additional charges, even if the journey is undertaken after the effective date, the ministry clarified. The fare list displayed at stations will also be updated to reflect the new fares effective from Friday.
"Notably, no changes have been made in reservation fees, superfast surcharges, or other ancillary charges, which will continue to be levied as per existing rules. GST applicability remains unchanged, and fares will continue to be rounded off according to prevailing norms," the ministry said in the release. End
