--GST official sets aside tax demand notice of INR 1.6 bln against Tata Steel 

 

MUMBAI – A goods and services tax official in Jharkhand set aside a notice demanding INR 1.62 billion of unpaid tax from Tata Steel Ltd. after finding that the company had already paid a major part of the sum, the company said in a filing late Monday. The GST official has also dropped the penalty of INR 1.62 billion.

  

The Joint Commissioner of CGST & Central Excise, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, had sent a show cause notice to Tata Steel in June alleging the erstwhile company Tata Steel Long Products incorrectly claimed input tax credit compensation cess. Tata Steel Long Products had been merged into Tata Steel in November 2023.

 

For the quarter ended September, the company reported a consolidated net profit of INR 31.02 billion on a consolidated revenue of INR 586.89 billion. On Monday, shares of the company closed 0.3% higher at INR 169.22 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
