NEW DELHI – Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd. Thursday said its board had approved setting up a joint venture with Coal India Ltd. to construct, operate, and maintain a coal gasification project at Western Coal fields in Maharashtra. BPCL will hold a 49% stake in this company, while Coal India will hold the remaining 51%, the former said in an exchange filing. The project is expected to produce synthetic natural gas, which could serve as a domestic alternative to imported natural gas.

The consideration for subscription of share capital is expected to be finalised when the definitive agreement is signed or when BPCL's board takes the final investment decision, and once the project feasibility study is finished.

"This collaboration aims to leverage CIL's strength in domestic coal production and BPCL's expertise in refining and gas marketing," BPCL said. "This initiative not only promotes the use of clean coal technologies but also enhances energy security, reduces import dependence, and supports sustainable industrial growth in India," the company said.

For the September quarter, BPCL had reported a net profit of INR 64.43 billion on a revenue of INR 1.22 trillion while Coal India's consolidated net profit stood at INR 43.54 billion on revenue of INR 301.87 billion. Thursday, shares of BPCL closed 1.4% lower on the National Stock Exchange at INR 363.4 and Coal India's shares closed 0.1% higher at INR 385.30.   End
