IMD sees dense to very dense fog over Punjab on Fri, Sat

MUMBAI – Dense to very dense fog is likely to prevail across a few places in Punjab in the early hours of Friday and Saturday and over Haryana and Chandigarh from Friday to Sunday, the India Meteorological Department said in its daily update Thursday. Similar weather conditions are likely to prevail over Uttar Pradesh from Friday to Sunday and over Uttarakhand on Friday and Saturday, the weather department said.
Dense fog in pockets of Punjab is very likely in the early hours on Sunday, Wednesday, and Dec. 25, and over Haryana and Chandigarh on Monday, Wednesday, and Dec. 25, in pockets of Uttar Pradesh from Dec. 22 to Dec. 25, the weather department said. Similar weather conditions are likely over Uttarakhand on Sunday, over Bihar from Friday to Monday, over Jharkhand and Odisha on Friday and Saturday, over West Bengal on Saturday, and over northeast India from Friday to Monday, it said.
Under the influence of a subtropical westerly jet stream with core winds of the order up to 105 knots at 12.6 kilometres above mean sea level prevailing over north India, cold wave conditions are very likely over parts of west Madhya Pradesh Thursday, the weather department said. Cold day to severe cold day conditions are very likely over parts of Uttar Pradesh on Friday and Saturday and cold day conditions are expected over Uttarakhand during the same period, the weather department said. A cold wave is declared when the minimum temperature at a station is 10 degrees Celsius or less in plains and 0 degrees Celsius or less in hilly regions.
Under the influence of a western disturbance due to a cyclonic circulation over Jammu in lower tropospheric levels, heavy rainfall or snowfall is expected over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad on Sunday, the weather department said.
No significant change in minimum temperatures is expected over northwest India during the next 24 hours, after which a gradual rise by 2–3 degree Celsius is likely in the subsequent three days. In Maharashtra, no significant change in the temperature is expected during the next two days and a gradual rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius is expected thereafter over the next five days, the weather department said. A gradual rise in minimum temperature by 2–3 degrees Celsius is expected in Gujarat during the next two days after which a gradual fall by 2–3 degrees Celsius is likely during the subsequent five days.
No significant change in maximum temperature is expected over Haryana and Punjab during the next 2–3 days and a gradual fall by 2–3 degrees Celsius thereafter is likely during the subsequent four days. In Uttarakhand, no significant change in temperature is expected during the next three days and a gradual fall by 1–2 degrees Celsius thereafter is likely during the subsequent four days, the weather department said. No significant change in maximum temperature is very likely over Bihar during the next seven days, it said. End
