NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday suggested linking Jordan's fast payment system with India's Unified Payment Interface. Jordan's fast payment system is called CliQ. India, in its effort to boost digital public infrastructure, has already integrated UPI with several other countries' fast payment systems. An interoperable fast payments system streamlines overseas remittances and merchant payments.

Modi, who concluded a two-day visit to Amman on Tuesday, also proposed that India and Jordan should increase the bilateral trade to $5 billion over the next five years. The two sides had bilateral trade of $2.67 billion in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), including imports of $1.91 billion to India. Jordan is a leading supplier of phosphates and potash fertilisers for India.

During the visit, Modi met King Abdullah II of Jordan. "Both the leaders discussed ways to further deepen bilateral engagement in the fields of trade and investment, defence and security, renewable energy, fertiliser and agriculture, innovation, Information Technology and digital technologies, critical minerals, infrastructure, health and pharma, education and capacity, tourism and heritage, and culture and people-to-people ties," the government said in a press release.

India and Jordan also signed five memorandums of understanding in the areas of renewable energy, water resource management, cultural exchange, digital solutions and a twinning agreement between Petra and Ellora. The Indian prime minister is currently on a three-nation visit, which will conclude Thursday. Modi's next stops are Ethiopia and Oman.  End
